Tales of Creation and Transformation is a story and arts group for teenaged girls. Currently I’m working with the Community Youth Program in Roanoke and I’ve also met with the young women at Tekoa School in Floyd. I tell a folktale with central female characters then the girls and I make something related to it. Our themes are the radiance of each person, the journey of our lives and the links of community. Stories come from around the world- The Magic Belt from Nigeria, Vasalisa from Russia, Seal Mother from the Arctic, and many more. We have made bracelets, bags, self portraits, clay figures, yarn dolls, a mandala collage, and other creations. If you know of a group of girls who might be interested in this project let me know. First funded by the Unitarian Universalist Women’s Fuller Grant, other grants may be available.
Share the Care is a group formed to help a friend in need. The structure is based on the book of this name by----. We have created a care group of over twenty people who commit to a visit each month. The group has made our caring for each other more manageable and enjoyable. We find that even though we are supposed to be caring for our friend we are receiving as much as we give. If you want to know more about our Floyd group, or you want to start your own group, get in touch.
